UNDERLAND

"Moon Ribas and Quim Girón, winners of the tandem El pa de cada dia, Mataró 2022"

Winning proposal for the production of a stage piece within the project Stronger Peripheries, based on the theme El pa de cada dia (Our Daily Bread). The collective is formed by Moon Ribas and Quim Girón."

After the great adventure of the mine, and what the mine has brought to this land, we asked ourselves what our people should do… “This is my fiftieth year underground, so for fifty years my life has been between the light and the darkness of the caves,” says speleologist Ubaldo Sanna, son of a family of miners from Sardinia, as we enter the Su Mannau cave where he has practiced speleology since 1973.

What is the relationship between people and the underground? The subterranean world is inaccessible, inhospitable, dark, and damp. It is a place where we bury what we want to hide, where we imagine legends of monstrous beings, and where we fear being trapped. At the same time, it is also where we find the most precious minerals for humanity, where we bury our loved ones, and where we uncover parts of our history. “Underground we have placed what we fear and want to abandon, and what we love and want to preserve” (MacFarlane, 2019).

Underland is a show created between Mataró (Catalonia) and Cagliari (Sardinia), which, during its creative process, collaborated with two choirs to explore the relationship between humans, the underground, and the planet. Our daily lives make us walk fast and project our gaze forward, but what happens if we change our perspective and look downward? We will find a planet that moves in geological time, with a history that is difficult for humanity to grasp. Our life is summed up in a centimeter of stalactite.

We invite you to become cyborg explorers, equipped with headlamps and cybernetic wristbands (that vibrate when the planet has seismic activity), and to leave the surface to slip Underground.
